State-of-the-Art Ships to Benefit Island's Economy, Environment

PRINCETON, NJ – TOTE, Inc. announced today it has committed to the construction of two new state-of-the-art containerships for the Puerto Rico trade, with options for three more vessels for additional domestic service. The agreement with General Dynamics NASSCO represents a major technological milestone in international shipping.

The vessels will be the most environmentally friendly containerships in the world with CO2 emissions-per-container that are 71% less than the vessels now in the Puerto Rican trade. Particulate Matter will be reduced by 99%. Sulfur oxides will be reduced by 98%. Nitrogen oxides will be reduced by 91%. The 3100 TEU vessels are expected to be the largest ships of any kind in the world powered primarily by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Both ships will be powered by dual-fuel LNG engines that greatly surpass the requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's clean air regulations.

General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, California will build the vessels, with construction expected to sustain 600 American shipyard jobs in Southern California. The first two vessels will be delivered and enter service between Jacksonville, FL and San Juan, PR in 2015 and 2016.

These new TOTE, Inc. ships will be the most efficient in the trade. The ship design accommodates five times more 53-foot containers than current ships in Puerto Rico and will allow for the transport of everything from cars to corn syrup. The ships will include expanded volumes for refrigeration equipment, critical to ensure that pharmaceuticals, produce and other foodstuffs vital to the residents of Puerto Rico are delivered in the best possible condition. The maritime shipping trade to Puerto Rico is an essential part of sustained economic development for the Island and these vessels will provide the most modern, reliable service available. The total capital committed to the project is over $350 million.

Anthony Chiarello, President and CEO of TOTE, Inc. said, "This investment demonstrates our commitment to the people of Puerto Rico and our environment. These vessels mark a new age of shipping using the best technology in the world."

Vessels Have Gone Two Years or Longer Without Environmental Incidents, Winning Chamber of Shipping Honor

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Nov. 19, 2012 - Sixty-one tugs and tank barges owned by Foss Maritime Company have been recognized by a major maritime organization for their environmental safety records.

The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the awards honoring the Seattle, WA-based Foss' environmental achievements on November 13, 2012 in Washington, D.C.

Altogether, the 61 Foss vessels recognized by CSA have gone a combined 543 years without an environmental incident. For a handful of Foss vessels, the awards marked 20 years of operation without an environmental accident.

When we talk with our customers, safety and the environment are the first things they bring up," said Gary Faber, Foss's president and COO. "To be honored by the Chamber of Shipping for our environmental record is something that underscores all our efforts at Foss. It is part of our corporate culture."

U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Joseph A. Servidio, Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy, participated in the awards ceremony and congratulated the great work performed by the industry.

Charles W. Parks of Tesoro Corporation and Vice Chairman of CSA said, "the great record evidenced by the ships and vessels is due to the dedication of the seafarers working on board and the support of shore operating personnel."

Joseph J. Cox, President of CSA said, "These awards celebrate the dedication to environmental excellence of our seafarers and the company personnel shore-side who operate our vessels to the highest standards. In today's world, it seems our industry only gets front-page news when spills or other environmental problems occur. It is encouraging to see how many vessels go for years achieving environmental excellence It should be clear to the American public that we in the maritime industry take our stewardship of the marine environment very seriously."

A list of the vessels that received the 2012 Environmental Achievement Award is posted on CSA's website www.knowships.org. Click on "Press Releases".

Company Applies Lessons Learened in Hati to NY-NJ Disaster

SEATTLE - Nov. 13, 2012 - Even before Superstorm Sandy finished its deadly rampage on America's East Coast, the federal government reached out to Foss Maritime Co. to provide disaster relief in devastated parts of New York and New Jersey.

The call came because officials knew of the Seattle-based company's successful work in earthquake-torn Haiti.

The Defense Logistics Agency contacted John Tirpak, Foss' Vice President of Marine Transportation, as communities throughout New York and New Jersey struggled to cope with the tidal surge and high winds that Sandy brought in its wake. Subways and rail lines were under water, people were trapped in homes and apartments, hospitals had no power, and vital communications centers had lost electricity.

We knew from our work in Haiti that we had to get the necessary equipment – and the right people - to affected areas as quickly as possible, said Tirpak. "And we knew from experience that we'd be entering a situation where chaos reigned, communication would be difficult if not impossible, and roadways would be impassable." As a result, Tirpak designated Rob Wagoner as Incident Commander for the Sandy Relief effort due to his extensive work in the Haiti Relief effort in Port Au Prince.

Within hours Foss had relief supplies headed to New York and New Jersey. The company mobilized 26 pumps, six generators and the personnel to operate the equipment from locations across the country, trucking them to Naval Air Station Lakehurst, NJ. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers marshaled the equipment for deployment from there.

Foss was contacted during Sandy because of the work we'd done in Haiti in partnership with the U.S. government, said Wagoner, who helped deliver tens of thousands of tons of food and rebuild the island-nation's main port as he oversaw company relief operations. "The Defense Logistics Agency in particular was well aware of Foss' capabilities in the face of a natural disaster."

Foss employees are still on duty at NAS Lakehurst, working to clean flood damage or provide electricity in communities on the Jersey Shore and New York, where nearly two weeks after the storm some services are still out.

Foss Fleet Expansion a Key Driver

SEATTLE - Nov. 2, 2012 - Foss Maritime Co., which is poised for a surge in new vessel construction, today announced two key additions to its directors' team: Hap Richards has been promoted to Director of New Construction while Jon Hie was named Director of Shipyard Operations.

In Richards' new post he will have responsibility for new construction strategies for all Foss' vessel construction projects. Hie will have responsibility for the operations of Foss' shipyards, oversee commercial vessel repair and maintenance work, and support Foss' fleet engineering requirements.

The appointment of Richards and Hie as directors comes as Foss embarks on a significant expansion of its tug and barge fleet, already the nation's largest.

The company starts work in 2013 on the first of three new Arctic-class deep-sea tugs built for customer service in the booming oil and gas industry. This, while continuing to serve the maintenance and repair needs of commercial and recreational vessels at its Seattle and Rainier yards.

Foss is entering a new construction phase that will emphasize safety, efficiency and the environment, said Gary Faber, President and COO of Foss Maritime. "Those are our customers' paramount concerns. They are at the core of Foss' corporate culture. It is why Foss is turning to an industry veteran like Hap Richards to focus exclusively on new build projects, while seasoned operations director Jon Hie maintains and grows our core repair business."

Richards brings more than three decades of maritime experience to his position. Prior to joining Foss in 2003, Richards had oversight over new construction projects at Whidbey Island-based Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, where he served on the company's board of directors. He has had positions of increasing responsibility, including foreman, yard superintendent, project manager and production manager. He has worked at both of Foss' shipyards at Rainer, Ore., on the Columbia River, and in Seattle, where he has been production manager at the company's Ballard facility since 2006.

Hie comes to Foss Maritime from Hawaii, where he was a Kirby Corporation division manager in the islands. A 1990 graduate of the California Maritime Academy, Hie has a degree in marine engineering. He has been employed both on-shore and ship-board in a variety of positions on the East Coast, the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean.

Foss Maritime has a well-earned reputation for innovation and a culture that stresses safety and the environment, Hie said. "It doesn't matter what coast you're on: People are talking about Foss' commitment to excellence."

Foss' shipyards serve United States government vessels, the petroleum and timber industries, fishing fleets, high-speed passenger vessels and private yachts for dry dock maintenance and repair:

THE SEATTLE SHIPYARD
The Foss Seattle shipyard, one of the most completely equipped yards on the Pacific coast, offers full-service vessel repair and maintenance. A team of experienced craftspeople provides cost-effective vessel repairs, major conversions and routine maintenance to commercial and recreational vessels. The yard services tugs, barges, workboats, passenger and car ferries, fishing fleets, high-speed passenger vessels, fish processing vessels, government vessels and yachts.

THE RAINIER SHIPYARD
On the leading edge of marine technology, engineering and boat building, the Foss Maritime Rainier shipyard constructs reliable, efficiently designed, and expertly crafted vessels. Foss offers new construction and repair of tugs, pilot boats, fireboats, barges and other workboats -- and hybrid tug conversions. Foss Maritime developed the first hybrid tug technology and built the world's first hybrid tug at its Rainier shipyard.

Foss Maritime To Expand Ocean Tug Fleet To Serve Oil And Gas Customers PDF Print E-mail
Marine Resources
Tuesday, 25 September 2012 06:48
SEATTLE, Aug 27, 2012 – Responding to new oil and gas industry opportunities, Foss Maritime Company will build the first three tugs in an innovative Arctic Class of tugs, a fleet expansion that broadens its capacity to take on large projects in extreme environments.

Construction on the first tug starts in early 2013 at Foss’ Rainier, Oregon shipyard, work which will bring additional jobs to the growing Columbia River facility.

At Foss we innovate, said Gary Faber, Foss’ President and Chief Operating Officer. "These vessels will be built using the latest advances in technology and equipment. We want to increase efficiency, improve safety and performance, and reduce environmental impact. These concerns are paramount to our customers, our stakeholders and our crews involved in offshore drilling and other project work in extreme environments."

Specifically, the new tugs will meet:
  • American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) A1 requirements, including standards for hulls, machinery, towing, anchors and cable;
  • American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Ice Class requirements
  • International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) requirements, including an on-board rescue boat and davit; and
  • Green Passport, which requires an inventory of shipboard hazardous materials that make decommissioning of vessels far safer.
Faber said the new tugs have been designed to withstand the rigors of Arctic operations and are suited to work across the globe. The new tugs will position the company to compete for opportunities in the oil and gas industry. Currently Foss has five assets committed to an Arctic offshore exploration project in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas and looks forward to providing additional assets in the Arctic. Several oil and gas customers are expected to perform similar projects in the region during the coming years, and Foss will be positioned to provide services and support with tugs, landing craft, crew boats and barges.

Foss has worked Alaskan Arctic waters for decades with a well-known record for our focus on, and innovation in, environmental protection with the highest of safety standards, Faber said. "We have unique skills when it comes to the transportation of infrastructure needed for Arctic oil and gas exploration in to areas with little or no infrastructure. The new tugs will enhance our ability to move cargoes safely."

Faber added that additional ABS classed tugs and support vessels are already under consideration.

Mike Magill, Vice President of Technical Services, who oversees Foss’ two shipyards and the company’s engineering department, said the three new tugs will be designed to achieve in excess of 100 metric tons of bollard pull, a measure of pulling power. The vessels will be used primarily to tow barges with oil field modules, rig topsides and project cargoes throughout the world.

Glosten Associates is Foss’ naval architecture partner on the project.

Design work is expected to be completed by year’s end. Machinery on the new tugs will include Caterpillar C280-8 main engines, which comply with the highest federal environmental standards; and Reintjes reduction gears. Markey Machinery will supply the tow winch.
